Burmese Devotees
Myanmar families have worshipped, studied and cooked at Mangala Vihara for decades. The Burmese-language classes, the weekend Abhidhamma examinations, the Vassa offering — this is the community behind them.
Who it is for
Burmese-speaking devotees in Singapore, and anyone connected to the Myanmar Buddhist community here. Some come for the Burmese-medium classes, some for talks given in Burmese, and some simply because the temple has long been a place where Myanmar families gather.
The temple's shrine hall has filled for Burmese-language teaching more than once — around five hundred devotees attended a talk by Sayadaw U Zauana in March 2009, and the hall was close to capacity again that August for Sayadaw Dr Nandamalabhivaṃsa.
How it connects to Myanmar Dhamma Studies
Myanmar Dhamma Studies (MDS) is the study side of this community, and most of what happens week to week happens there. Classes run in Burmese every weekend and concentrate on Abhidhamma. Since 2012 Mangala Vihara has been a recognised examination centre for the Abhidhamma examinations held by Myanmar's Ministry of Religious Affairs, so students here sit the same papers as students in Myanmar.

What the community does
It feeds the temple
MDS students and Myanmar devotees have repeatedly taken on the Sangha's lunch dāna — including one Chinese New Year when the regular kitchen volunteers were committed elsewhere and the Myanmar students stepped in.
It makes the Vassa offering
Following the Vassa invitation ceremony each year, MDS students and devotees hold their own dāna ceremony for the monks residing at the temple. Devotees buy the monks' requisites — robes, slippers, umbrellas — from stalls set up outside the main shrine, and the ceremony runs through chanting, the lay offering and a Dhamma talk, finishing with a Myanmar bento and a cold drink.
It serves at temple-wide events
At the 2025 National Day Piṇḍapāta, MDS students ran the rice distribution, making sure every devotee had the chance to offer cooked rice to the monks — organised by Sister Yee Yee and Brother Koko. MDS is one of the temple's standing sub-groups, planning major days alongside the Sunday Dhamma School, the Buddhist and Pāli College and Theravāda Buddhist Studies in Chinese.

Burmese Dhamma Class · Sundays, 5.00pm – 8.00pm
Chew Quee Neo Hall (level 2) and the Subhadda Room (level 3).
Other gatherings — the Vassa offering, festival dāna, visiting Sayadaws — follow the temple calendar and are announced as they are arranged.
How to join
Come to a Sunday class, or ask at the office. No registration is described in the temple's own accounts, and newcomers are received as they arrive.
