What is MVDF

A fellowship, not a class

A self-organised community of adult practitioners who study the Buddha's teachings in depth, support the temple's work, and befriend one another on the path.

We gather weekly, working slowly through a single sutta (a recorded teaching) or an Abhidhamma topic over months, reading together, discussing, sometimes disagreeing, and always returning to the text. There are no exams and no prerequisites; we learn by showing up.

Alongside study, members take turns helping with events and supporting newcomers who arrive on Sundays wondering what to do next.

Our study classes

Two tracks, one fellowship

MVDF meets in two study circles that run in parallel. You're welcome at either, or both, and to drop in without committing. Each is led by a senior member with support from the Venerable.

Education programme

Sutta Study

A slow, careful reading of one sutta at a time from the Majjhima and Saṃyutta Nikāya, with reference to Pāli where it helps.

Abhidhamma

A systematic study of the Abhidhamma, the Buddha's analysis of mind and matter, using the Abhidhammattha Saṅgaha as its primary text.

Join us & contact

Join us, or just come by

There are no fees and no forms. The simplest way to begin is to come to a Thursday study class; after a few visits, some people put their names on the volunteer roster and take a share of the stewardship. That's the fellowship in both directions.

How to join

Three ways people usually begin, pick whichever feels easiest.

  • Come to the Thursday study class. Turn up at 7.30pm in the Chew Quee Neo Hall on level 2. Someone will greet you, hand you a booklet, and introduce you around.
  • Call first. Ring +65 6744 4285 and we'll tell you about the group and what we're currently reading.
  • Meet us on a Sunday. Several members are at the temple on Sundays; mention MVDF at reception and someone will find you.
